Where do I begin?

The back-end of the OpenEd Community site is a wiki! The function of the site is as simple as its sleek design (thanks to White Whale, a fantastic consulting, design, and development company based in Oakland, California). Like any wiki, OpenEd is open for you to edit and contribute to. Simply sign up for an account to begin.

Site Structure

Although this site is a wiki, humans have intervened and qualified certain pages. This simply means that you will not be able to edit a small number of designated pages. Currently, the site's structure is envisioned as consisting of three kinds of pages:

1. Front page
2. Landing pages
3. All other pages

Only site administrators can edit the front and landing pages. The front page is the home page you land on with the boxes scrolling across the bottom. The landing pages are linked in the left menu. In addition, there are a few pages (such as this one) that do not call for community contribution, which are also delegated to site admin. The reason for this is simple; we want to preserve access to community contributed content which exists on all other pages. Since one accesses this deeper content on the front and landing pages, it makes a lot of sense to protect them.

All other pages

All other pages are free for you to edit, re-conceive, and improve. We have provided some preliminary categories on these pages for you to contribute to, but please don't feel limited by them. Anyone can create a new category or page for a variety of purposes (ie. to plan a conference, to elicit discussion on a particular topic, and more). Although we encourage you to first look at what's already here, as there may already exist a page for your specific needs, nothing stops you from creating an entirely new section of the site.

Featured items on the front page

OpenEd features various items on its home page, including projects, news items, people, and resources. Below are the ways we determine who or what gets featured each week. By and large, most of it is determined by you.

Projects

Featured projects are determined by the community. Please see People_and_Projects#Featured_Project for more information.

People

Featured people are also determined by the community. Please see People_and_Projects#Featured_People for more information.

Resource of the Week

Featured resources are also determined by the community. The site administrator watches the Resources page for new additions, and features relevant resources as they come in.

News in Open Education

Since there is a plethora of open education news sites on the web, we are more discerning about selecting a featured news item. All news sites are aggregated at Open Education News, which anyone is free to edit. There you will also see a news feed from openeducationnews.org, a community news blog sponsored by the Open Society Institute and the Shuttleworth Foundation.

The site administrator will filter these sites for relevant news items of interest, and feature the most pertinent ones on the home page. If there is a news item of significant interest to the OpenEd Community that you would like to see featured, don't hesitate to contact us.
